Feeble tremor reported in eastern Cuba
19:19, March 23, 2010

Cuban's National Seismological Service recorded a very feeble earthquake
in eastern Cuba Monday morning with a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter
scale, the National General Staff of the Civil Defense (DC) said Monday.

The feeble tremor occurred at about 09:15 a.m. local time (1315 GMT),
some 32 km south of Baconao, with a depth of 48 km, local press quoted
the DC as saying, without reports of casualties or damage.

Earthquakes below 3-magnitude are hardly perceptible, and most of them
can only be recorded by nearby seismographs.

After a 5.6-magnitude quake jolted the eastern Cuban province of
Guantanamo on Saturday, the National Seismological Service recorded
several aftershocks perceived by residents in the provinces of Santiago
de Cuba, Guantanamo, Granma and Holguin.

The National Earthquake Research Center, the DC and the central
administrative agencies of the state are closely monitoring the
situation, said the report.

The people must remain calm and follow the guidelines of the
authorities, said the DC.
