Boulder-based Platte River Associates faces criminal charges of "trading
with the enemy" for allegedly providing computer software and training
in 2000 used to help oil and gas exploration and development in Cuba's
territorial waters.
The charges in U.S. District Court in Denver were announced Tuesday by
the U.S. Attorney's Office in Colorado. If convicted, Platte River
Associates faces a fine of up to $1 million plus restitution.
Prosecutors separately charged Jay Leonard, president of Platte River
Associates, with the unauthorized access of a password-protected
computer at the Houston International Airport in 2005. If convicted,
Leonard faces up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine, plus
restitution.
Leonard couldn't be reached for comment, and a Platte River employee
answering the phone said the company didn't have a statement at this time.
Prosecutors said Platte River didn't get the required license from the
secretary of the Treasury.
Platte River's Web site lists the company as providing petroleum systems
modeling software and services around the world.
