Key moments in US-Cuba thaw, one year on

A year since the United States and Cuba announced their historic
decision to restore diplomatic ties, here is a list of key developments:

May 29, 2015: The United States removes Cuba from its list of state
sponsors of terrorism.

July 20: The two countries formally restore diplomatic relations. Cuba
opens embassy in Washington.

August 14: United States opens embassy in Havana in a ceremony attended
by Secretary of State John Kerry.

September: United States eases financial restrictions on Cuba, including
on remittances, aid and banking. Cuba warns the measures will not work
until the trade embargo is lifted so Cuba can operate in dollars.

November: The countries increase cooperation on migration,
drug-trafficking, search and rescue, maritime port security and fugitives.

November 2: Telecom giant Sprint becomes the first US company to sign a
deal to provide a direct roaming mobile phone service for foreigners
visiting Cuba.

November 18: The countries sign a deal on marine protected areas, their
first environmental agreement since the thaw.

November 19: US bank Stonegate announces it has begun offering its
American clients debit cards they can use in Cuba.

December 9: US officials say Cuba has handed over the first fugitive
wanted by the United States since the diplomatic thaw.

December 11: The two countries agree to restore a direct postal service
between them 52 years after severing it.

December 17: The United States and Cuba announce plans to resume flights
between the two countries.
