Never one to miss a business opportunity, Viscount Linley has, however,
raised eyebrows with his latest venture.
The Queen's nephew has introduced a range of humidors to mark the 50th
anniversary of the Communist revolution in Cuba.
The 47-year-old son of the late Princess Margaret, who owns a furniture
company, has produced humidors engraved with the Cuban flag. The £5,350
containers feature a selection of cigars including the Cohiba brand,
which was created for Fidel Castro in 1966. Lord Linley boasts that
"only Fidel, heads of states and diplomats were given Cohiba cigars as
very special gifts".
The range has upset some Cuban exiles. One of them, Ramón Ramírez, who
lives in London, tells Mandrake: "I can't believe that your Royal family
is helping turn Castro into a hero. You should be helping throw the
regime out."
However, Robert Miller, director of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign,
showers praise on Lord Linley. "He has, obviously, been moved by the
country," he says. "I have never heard of a royal endorsement of Cuba
before. It is time for people to move on from Cold War attitudes."
