Saturday May 06, 2006 14:14 - (SA)

South African deputy Communications Minister Roy Padayachie will visit
Cuba next week where he is to sign the South Africa/Cuba information and
communication technologies programme of action.

In a statement, his department said he would be in Cuba from Monday -
May 8 - to Thursday, May 11.

The visit comes after an agreement entered into by the South African and
Cuban governments on ICT development in 2003. In the accord, the two
countries agreed to work together on the implementation of ICT programmes.

Padayachie will be accompanied by Communications deputy director general
Keith Shongwe, in charge of strategic policy co-ordination and
integration and department official Mokwining Nhlapo, the chief
operations officer of the Presidential National Commission, a body that
advises President Thabo Mbeki on the country's information society
programme.

According to the South African department, Cuba has made a number of
technological advancements and is a strategic partner in the
implementation of ICTs.

The SA/Cuba ICT agreement will provide for a joint committee that will
identify ICT projects and share experiences.
