More trade needed between T&T, Cuba

More trade needed between T&T, Cuba
Foreign Affairs Minister:
Louis B Homer South Bureau

Wednesday, May 6th 2009

There is a need to reduce the regulatory barriers

that exist between communist Cuba and Trinidad

and Tobago, if more trade is to be developed between the two countries,
said Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon.

Gopee-Scoon said "there is still an untapped market in Cuba for T&T
investors and all efforts should be made by business people to develop
greater links".

She said, at this point, another trade mission to Cuba should be mounted
in order to create more investments in what she described as a "virgin
territory".

She said, politically, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago does not
support the isolation of Cuba and the US recently appointed an
ambassador to that country.

Gopee-Scoon was speaking at a breakfast meeting sponsored by the
Couva/Point Lisas Chamber at Kampo Restaurant, Chaguanas.

She said in spite of the economic challenges facing the country, "we
expect the economy to decline by one or two per cent" and even with the
slowdown, "many companies from abroad are still showing interest in
investing in Trinidad and Tobago".

Speaking about the trade relationship between Trinidad and Mexico,
Gopee-Scoon said the two have had a long and cordial trade relationship
since 1966.
