The Port of Montreal last week saw the first call of a service
connecting it to the Mediterranean and Cuba.
Melfi Marine Corp. provides the service, which previously called at
Halifax, with three 1,388-TEU ships that call at Naples, Valencia,
Havana and Montreal every 10 days.
The port said container volume has grown 14 percent over the first
five months of 2009.
"The choice of Montreal is proof that our strategic advantages, such
as the shortest transit time with North Europe and the Mediterranean,
our location 1,600 kilometers inland and having an efficient intermodal
rail system, represent real advantages for shippers," said Tony Boemi,
vice president, growth and development, at the Montreal Port Authority.
