NEW YORK CITY (WSVN) -- The United Nations is set to meet and call for
an end to the Cuban embargo Tuesday morning.
There are two options for the United States, to vote against the
resolution, as it has done in the past, or make a historic move and
abstain from the vote.
Both president Barack Obama and Cuban president Raul Castro, while at
the United Nations in September, pushed for an end to the embargo.
"Change won't come overnight to Cuba," said President Obama, "but I am
confident that openness, not coercion, will support the reforms and
better the lives the Cuban people deserve."
The vote will be the first since the United States and Cuba restored
relations and their embassies this summer.
Cuban and State-run media says foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez is in
New York to watch the vote in person. He said, "The blockage or embargo
that has caused damages and hardships to the Cuban people, and affects
the interests of American citizens, should be lifted."
The vote at the UN is only symbolic, as only the U.S. Congress has the
power to lift the embargo.
Congresswoman Illeana Ros-Lehtinen believes the embargo should remain in
place. "I believe that the correct position for the United States should
be to do what we have done, which is keep the embargo, vote against the
resolution, even though we will be in the minority."
The potentially symbolic vote could take place Tuesday afternoon.
